Thread-topic: [CRTech] RDS Encoder?

Hi Jim,

The Model 720 only has a 9 pin serial port for dynamic data.  Though the Model 720 and Model 730 have a USB port on the front, no automation system sends data to these encoders via USB.

The Model 730 (discontinued) and the new Model 732 can both receive data via an IP connection.  This is much preferred to a serial connection.  😉

Let me know if you’ve got other questions about how to set up your automation.

I think we tried a home-made adapter when we first set it up and it would not make a connection. Maybe, I'll try one of the commercially made ones. I don't think my 720 has a LAN port. I was looking to upgrade to something else. Most newer computers don't come with a serial port any more.

Pretty sure the newer innovonics can do IP as well. I have an innovonics, a 2wcom, and a couple PIRA. I use 9pin or IP on all mine. You could try a usb to serial adapter, but honestly I’d just use IP rather than usb. Seriel works good for me over my STL. Latency over IP shouldn’t bean issue if your on a LAN, which I’m assuming you would be if USB is in the running. Heck it really isn’t an issue over WAN given the low Data rate of RDS there is usually a bit of latency anyway.

What are you all using to get full function RDS encoding into your signal? I keep looking at Inovonics, but they still use 9 pin serial ports to get data. My automation computer does not have a serial port nor does it have any slots available to put one in. Are there any dynamic encoders out there that use a usb connection from computer to encoder?
