dave allen, "the dog poop in the …" really got to me. I always read your posts, and not only because they are relevant and insightful …

I don't know what the boundary line is between a lament and a complaint, but your post is well placed. I'm glad I stepped in it.

it's an old rule that perhaps we don't think we need anymore - backup systems or reliability should be based on different technology, not just more of the same technology...

my greatest lament in all this has nothing to do with technology itself.... TV (and before it "the" radio) used to draw families together. now we are enabling, even sucking people into, isolation. saw a young couple in the park yesterday, walking side by side, but miles apart, each with their cellphone in their face. did they even notice the grass, the trees, the rabbits, ducks, deer, the dog poop in the .....ooh... too late.

in a way it's a shame that we can feed a gazillion streams to a gazillion cellphones. but also a shame that it has to gobble everything else up to do it...

The internet is great...WHEN IT WORKS. 2 weeks ago we had storms, and MY ISP was down for over 12 hours. That means no streams, no FTP, no remote access, no remote voice tracking.......But all of our C-band programming (And we use a lot, especially over the weekend when the storms hit) continued to play. I did have  an XDS lockup and we lost some Time shifted content, but the Live programing continued to play.

When Radio is most relevant is when the Internet, cell phones, etc...IS not working.

And this is really my largest concern about this whole mess. If it were just program content, that would be one thing. Programming can be pushed out days in advance. There are a number of programs that we take via internet only, because that's the only way they are offered. Rarely is there an issue because programming can be posted and downloaded weeks or even months in advance, then used as needed. Live feeds are another story altogether.

We left a news service a couple years ago that was trying to go cheap and replace live C-band delivery with Internet only delivery for "live"
news. I'm sure that streaming could prove to be a better alternative than posting a file every hour and requiring stations to download it, but as others have said, it's not on the same page with C-band for reliability.

I realize that live content delivery isn't quite as simple, but given
the fact that most teenagers can live stream pretty reliably from
their cell phones, we should be able to come up with a consistent
method with multiple layers of redundancy.
