Thanks for your thoughts, Willie. Two nights ago my friend in New Mexico put a Compellor at the studio ahead of the Marti mono STL and moved the Orban 9200 to the transmitter site. Huge improvement. Says it sounds so much louder; the modulation is much more dense with no negative peak spatter and positive peaks tight at 125%. Wish he'd found the Compellor while I was still there so we could have made the change then. I would have heard it further as I drove west. As I expected, the STL did not like dealing with the processed audio.

Just a handful of thoughts from a "former" AM guy of 20 years. :) (It's

I wouldn't decrease the high end bandwidth like that. It helps with speech
clarity to keep those highs out to 9KHz or so. There really isn't much
"power" in the highs, either. Depending upon the radio, those highs will
help with intelligibility.

You COULD reduce the low end a few DB, tho. THAT is where POWER is really
wasted, considering that the VAST MAJORITY of AM listening isn't done on
hi-fi systems with big woofers. ;) Anything below ~50Hz, for example, is
really unnecessary for talk formats. A slope-off, rather than a brickwall,
is good. Too much bass makes talk sound too muddy.

I'm also wondering if it would make sense to cut the audio bandwidth in
half from the 9200, say 4.5kHZ instead of 9-ish to stop wasting modulation
on frequencies that almost no receivers except the modulation monitor can
pass?
