My experience of late with Econco has been similar to Tommy’s. Anything from 3CX6000 (YU-148) to 4CX15,000 (about 5 tubes) have been “hit or miss” for working or working correctly out of the box. It has been very discouraging after years of Econco being as good or better than new. I have had a 3CX15,000, a 4CX20,000A and a 4CX12,000 from Econco all work well in the last 2 years.
I took care of a BE 5 KW tube transmitter for a few years. We ran National tubes (4CX3500?) in it without problems. The tube life was not bad, 1-2 years IIRC. This was in the last 6 years.
Solid state is very nice, but saying “I need $95K to replace a 25 kW transmitter” doesn’t go to far when the transmitter is still running well. That transmitter is celebrating its 35 anniversary of operation next week.
I have an RCA BTF-20E1 running at 9 kW (license power) that I can’t even get $45K to replace. It was new when I was in junior high and has been installed at 3 or 4 stations in its life.
Some days being too good at your job has drawbacks. But it is for God’s glory, no the praises of men.

Subject: Re: [CRTech] Time for a new or rebuilt tube
Hi folks! I too would love to see what alternatives folks are using instead of Econco. Out of 5 rebuilts we have received from them this year, 3 have been bad out of the box. Two dead at startup and one lasted 30
Minutes before an internal
Short killed it. The one that worked lasted a little
Over 6 months before not making sufficient power to keep them. This is in 4 different transmitters so it has to be tubes. We finally started buying new tubes lately. Changing a tube three times just to get a good one is a pain!
The owner of one of the stations asked me about National. Any experience with these for new ones. All my experience with them
Is many years back. We are using 3CX15000A7 and 3CX20000A7.
I know this has been discussed before but I can't find the old emails. We need a new or rebuilt 4CX7500A. I see that RF Parts has a Taylor brand new one for $1795 while ECONCO wants $1949 to rebuild our old one.
Anybody tried the Taylor? Or a suggestion for another rebuilder?
