We use Zipwhip. You can use your existing studio number, even the toll free number, so listeners don't have to remember a separate number. It does cost, but we find it's worth it.

We also use Google Voice, in our case we forward our 800 studio line to Google Voice for calls and voice messages.

What I'd be really interested in is somehow using Google Voice to take text messages sent to the 800 number.

I'm not sure that's possible though, and that one would have to use a service like ZipWhip instead.

Where I am working, they got a Google Voice number (it is free). It is associated with a gmail account. The dispatcher keeps a browser window open in the corner of her screen and the texts come in as emails. When one comes in, she sees the activity and goes to the window and deals with the message. Every studio these days has a computer with Internet access. Should be easy to keep a browser window up.

If you're cheap, like me, set up a Raspberry Pi for $40, get a wireless keyboard and mouse from WalMart for $20, a monitor or TV with HDMI from Goodwill for $7, and have a dedicated computer for the purpose.

Since the text messages go through gmail, you only need a browser and you can have it open on multiple computers at once.

Is anyone using a service to provide incoming texting into the studio for listener interaction?  If so, what solution are you using, and was it a turnkey service or something you rolled on your own?
