The FAX-3 I installed to replace the Harris FM-3H would go off the air rather than fold back elegantly. A call to GatesAir tech support set the transmitter calibration factors for the station TPO (2300 watts) and no further problems.

The GUI on the Nautel is nicer but is Flash based so it won't load on iPhones and takes a special browser on Android. Nautel will email you, Gates Air lives in the SNMP world.

I think that SWR foldback is user adjustable on the Gates boxes, if you're willing to assume more risk, you can up that ratio! I want to say they ship at 1.3 foldback. But you're right, 1.5 being the max is a little low with no radomes.  Every time the ice has gotten bad enough to shut it down, I usually click low power and power on and they fire back up. I have the same issue with my Nautel though. There's been occasions in Nebraska that the Nautel just wouldn't come back on no mater "watt"!

I have 3 Nautels and two of the Gates Flexivas. All are fairly reliable. The only problem I have had with the Flexivas is with icing and power foldback. It has been my experience that they don't really foldback much. If your SWR goes above 1.5:1 they are made to just shut down. Now that might not be a problem if you have radomes, autosensing deicers or if you don't get ice storms. For me, it means I have had stations off the air until the ice melts off the antenna.

Over the past few years I've installed a few GatesAir FAX series xmtrs (up to 10kw), and the results have been fantastic.  They have been noticeably more reliable than the hand-full of Nautel boxes (again, up to 10kw) I've installed, which came with a variety of problems right out of the box.

My thought is, if a US manufacturer has a product that's as good (or better), and for the same (or better) price, they deserve a shot.  I gave GatesAir a shot, and have NOT been disappointed!  As long as they keep turning out such great products, for such competitive prices, they will have my business.  We also had some rather unpleasant interactions with customs trying to get parts out of Nautel.  I don't think I wanna go there again...ever.

We just received a $10,000 grant to go towards the purchase of a new transmitter here at KCFY.  I already know that Nautel is a really good transmitter if you can afford it.  I'm really looking for opinions on some other options.  Anyone using GatesAir Flexiva Solid State Transmitters, or Ecreso Solid State Transmitters.  Our plan is to move our current QEI Transmitter to the backup position and put a new transmitter as the main.

Appreciate your thoughts!
