Jim,

If the power level and budget fits, Nautel VS.

I have installed several BW Broadcast exciters and transmitters and have been reasonably impressed with their lower cost offerings.   I had one 150w transmitter fail but BW was very good to work with to get it to England, repaired and back.   Their v2 series is a nice improvement over the original exciters.

I have been advocating that customers purchase the highest output exciter/transmitter that will turn down to the level of input power needed to drive their main TX.  A 300w "exciter" in place of a dead main TX really reduces the stress level and in many cases, most listeners can't tell the difference.  Just be careful of the minimum output power for the various brands and models.

Bad storms rolled through our area last Sat and a quick power bump and subsequent outage decided to fry either the output transistor or the power controller circuit for our exciter. Now, this was just a simple 30 watt Tex-LCD from RVR. I patched in a 21 year old exciter from a long dead Energy-Onix transmitter to get back on the air, but I am thinking I should buy something new. Surely, exciter technology has improved in our digital, microprocessor world. I thought I'd throw this out to the brain trust and ask what do you consider to be the best quality exciter on the market?
