Or, I’m actually surprised at how many U4K’s are available on ebay for pretty cheap.

One of my oldest customers, engineer and friend has a Unity 4000 rx that started doing odd things a couple of weeks ago.  I haven't had time to get to his site and may not for another week or two.

It started dropping audio intermittently, with a wildly fluctuating EB and then more than intermittently and now just sits and to use his term, "chatters".  He originally checked the LNB, cable, etc, etc but nothing seemed to cure the increasing drop outs.  Now it appears to be mostly dead and I assume that the "chattering" sound that he is hearing is one or more relays closing.

Anybody ever saw a power supply in the 4000 cause something like this?  Is the PS replaceable?  Any idea on a part #?

If not a PS, then what?

What does the front panel do during that chattering?  Is it fully illuminated and maintain the text display consistently?

It certainly could be a failing PS, so don’t discount that possibility.

My first thought, though, [if the front panel and LEDs stay lit like normal] is that he’s got some serious terrestrial (or satellite) interference or a bad LNB (or even dish alignment).  Has he checked the LNB voltage?  Could the LNB itself be going bad?

If the signal level is fluctuating wildly, that would explain the alarm relay chattering as the IRD goes in and out of warning/alarm.

One key tip for troubleshooting the U4k:

* Disconnect the RF input and hard-power-cycle the U4K.  If it powers up normally and doesn’t chatter with no RF input, then it may be perfectly fine.

* If the chattering starts when the RF is applied, take a hard look at the RF signal path from the dish to the U4k.  You’ll likely find a signal problem before it gets to the receiver.
