I have a friend who tried to ditch the side lights on an AM tower and ran into this. I don't remember the specifics, but it was a very similar situation. He thought they were just getting rid of the solid side markers and ended up having to add a beacon or something. Pretty sure that tower wasn't even 350 feet either.

They can turn off the side marker lights but any tower over 350 feet has a beacon on top and TWO in the middle half way up.  Ouch! They have to buy two expensive lights and wire them!  Then they discover the skinny underrated erector set (windcharger) tower can't support that much extra load.  So much for saving the electricity of a few side marker lights when everything turns to junk.
