Hey Dave,

I am a Mac user at home. I honestly have no idea where mine is set, other than I know it isn't #1. I use third party apps all the time, though I don't download new stuff regularly. Personally, knowing who you are, I would not be at all opposed to setting an exception if it were relatively straightforward.

hi all. need some feedback from mac users. not wanting to start an OS war. just ONE question...

do you have your 'allow apps downloaded from' set to...
1. apple store
2. apple store and identified developers
3. anywhere

i bought a fairly expensive certificate so i could 'sign my code'. this encrypts it to protect it from tampering, and identifies me as me (er Reyware). the approval process took months for them to confirm that i am for real. and their advertising said i could sign mac code too.

...and i can.... it is an official certificate, recognized the world over.

...by everyone in the world except apple that is. they insist you have THEIR certificate for them to consider you 'identified'. for another $99/yr.

but if folks run their macs at #3, or don't mind setting exceptions, then i don't need to spend the money for my 1-2 mac apps.

yeah, apple could do the world a favor and have another level, for developers identified by certificate authorities other than apple. but of course that is not the apple way...... in this regard they have their heads up their butts even farther than microsoft, who at least recognizes certificates from many authorities (competition etc)...
