I totally agree with your observations.
Started with Knoppix' live CD,and then went to SuSE, finally landing on Ubuntu. Dumped them when they went to the Unity desktop. Found out about Mint, which as been my daily driver at home for almost 6 years. My laptop, an Acer Aspire 5532 runs Peppermint, which combines the best features of the LXDE and XFCE desktops. What's NOT to like?
