I use SDR# (S-D-R Sharp), HDSDR and a couple of others with both the $20 dongles and SDRPlay receivers.

Stock, the cheap dongles do not work below about 25mhz.  There are a number of modifications etc to make them sort of receive MW frequencies.  There are a number of them that are pre-modified to receive in a couple different sections with a switch/antenna connection flip and a few (SDRPlus) that will receive MW thru microwave without physically switching anything.

This dongle and many others displays signal strength when connected to a cell phone running free apps.

Not very basic, but this displays signal strength in dBuV.   Very nice for relative comparisons.  Also measures much else such as modulation, RDS sub level, pilot level, decodes RDS, etc.

To the Braintrust:

Are you aware of any inexpensive, very basic, analog FM receiver modules? The goal is to come up with a simple "relative" field strength measuring device for fairly strong FM radio signals.

I've tinkered with a 2-transistor design with a single tank circuit front-end, that "kinda works", but I'd like something more selective, and a bit more sensitive.

Ideas? Links? :)

Meanwhile, a-Googling I will go. ;)
