As usual, Jim Turbo has a lot of good to say.

Here in Grand Rapids, we have two NAS boxes. Like Jim, we use Second Copy to make incremental backup of the areas of the hard drives that change. For all of our editing computers, we have a "large" 1 or 2 TB internal drive, labeled "S" drive. The S stands for storage on that cpu. Then there is a folder labeled "Audio". We tell the staff, anything stored under the S:\Audio\  will be backed up every night. These backups go to the 1st NAS. The second NAS, once a week, will moved everything from the BU1 folder in it onto the BU2 folder , and everything on that first NAS to the second NAS's "BU1". This way, we have three copies deep of everything, one week apart. It is a task to set up, but it is worth it.

However, that backs up the critical data. If you toast a hard drive, whether from malicious software or a mechanical reason, you are going to spend a lot of time rebuilding/reformatting that drive.

Enter AOEMI. I believe in this product, or those like it so much, I use it at home. We use AOEMI to back up the entire C: drive on every cpu in the building anywhere from once a week to once a month. This backup has your entire  drive, including the recovery portion on it.  These AOEMI images go to a third NAS.

Twice in the last 3 years we have lost a hard drive. From the time we realized the hard drive was toast, to the time that machine was back online was  90 minutes. We grab a spare new HD, use a $ 60 USB to SATA docking box, and then use a utility computer, and the image goes on that hard drive. In the case of our production machines, since the audio is on the "S" drive, we are plug n play. If anything else needs to be dropped back in, that data is on the NAS.

Also, the second NAS mentioned above is in a different building, in case of the proverbial fire.

This sounds like a lot of work, but the piece of mind it gives George and me is huge. One hint. Check you back up programs every Monday when you are doing the logs. CPU's have a tendency to stop programs from time to time, for no reason. Ask me how I know!
