If you have tried a new NIC and cable, the issue most likely  lies with the  PCI/E slot on your computer or your switch as Dan suggested.

Try another port on the router!

Do not discount that the NIC (onboard or in a slot) could be bad. They do! Try another NIC.

To the Braintrust:

I have a computer that apparently only recently started having weird LAN connection issues... it keeps showing "connected/disconnected" in a repeating cycle, as though someone is plugging and unplugging the LAN cable.

Tried in a different port, new cable, etc. No help.

Created a backup, and restored to a new HD, and installed a whole new MoBo, which included a new LAN port.

After all the drivers were in, the computer worked... but the LAN started going on/off again, same as before!! :O Now, this is with a COMPLETELY NEW MOBO, (new LAN port) and even connected to a different switch! Obviously, it's something in Windows. (XP)

A Google search suggested changing from 1GB speed to 100Mbit. That stopped the "blinking", so that important computer is once again useful...for now.

I hope to find an answer, tho, so I can work on it on Friday, and fix it properly... but now, my workday is done. ;)
