Thread-topic: [CRTech] SDD failure modes

Stick with Crucial/Micron, Samsung, and Sandisk in a pinch.  I haven't seen anything good or bad about the newer Western Digitals, but the other three I mentioned are good.

And although Sandisk is king of SD cards… I would put them at the bottom of the stack of three that I just mentioned…  They work, but they don't perform the best.

I wasn't in the room to witness the actual failure, I walked in to see a BSOD. :(

I also tried to access the drive with an external USB/SATA interface on my XP machine, and on a WIN7 machine. No go, either way. The interface was visible, but the drive was inaccessible. Dead as doornails. :( I tested a different drive in the interface, and it worked perfectly. (I've used that interface many times, so I know it's a good one.)

My SSD was an off-brand. This time, I got two identical SanDisk drives with hundreds of 5-star ratings on Newegg. I'm just waiting for the UPS man, now. ;) According to the tracking, I SHOULD have the package tomorrow! (Tues)

I praise God that I had this April backup, and an old SATA laptop drive to get me back up and running! :)

Windows XP does not have TRIM commands, so if you did not install the manufacturers software (and I believe you have to manually run it from time to time), the drive will not be TRIM’ed and I believe this causes failure. Not sure if it’s irreversible failure, or if that is what happened to your drive Willie, But something to consider.
