I believe the idea behind the dummy load was to compare the readings to see if they are close and if so perhaps reveal that there may be a false reading of the Bird based upon its location in the transmission line.

Unless the Rules have changed, you cannot use a common air-cooled dummy load to determine power. It must be done with a water-cooled Calorimitor load. With it all operating, you measure the amount of water flowing thru the load and the temperature rise. From that info, you calculate the BTUs per minute of heat being generated from the RF. Only then can you calculate the power, which is equal to the amount of power being turned into heat.

Oh yeah, had a Tymeter, too. That’s the mechanical digital one that was popular in the 70s. One AM radio station I worked for had one. We set it so the minute turned over at :30, rounding up.
