Check out Hans Van Zupthen’s mention of the SSB for stereo in his presentation of the Omnia SST. It can automatically switch between single and double sidebands.

Subject: RE: [CRTech] Single Side Band FM Stereo?
I wish receivers came with a way to minimize or defeat the blending feature; maybe a small pot behind a lift up panel. I’d rather the signal remain in full stereo and put up with a bit of chuffing rather than have it blend to mono or worse- having the stereo image constantly opening up and then collapsing.

When I've spoken with some engineers who have tried it, they said the results were somewhat less dramatic in the real world than presented by Mr. Foti. This depended on the radio and antenna used. A lot of radios in use today have gotten pretty good at concealing multi-path.
