For whatever reason... the RRUbuntu thumbdrive won't even boot. :( BIOS asks for a boot media. The dd appears to have properly transferred the iso to the USB with no errors, but no go.

I'll just get the minimal CentOS6 installer going on the USB, first, then tinker with the setup procedure that Fred linked to, here:

TIME PERMITTING, of course. ;)

My sincere thanks to everyone that has added valuable input to this conversation! I wish I could devote some solid hours to this, but it's just not a priority, so I tinker... here a little, and there a little. ;)

ISIAH 28:10 "For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:" (Sounds like writing CODE, doesn't it?) ;)

As for buying refurb WIN7 machines... Easier/better to buy the parts and just build from NEW. :) That would also allow buying a few spares to keep on the shelf. Nicest thing about LINUX, is not having to deal with the HASSLE of "activating" Windows. The extreme rarity of any viruses or malware attacks is another big plus! :)

I have already experimented with installing Linux Mint on one machine... then simply moved that HD into another machine... and it JUST WORKED! Can't do THAT with Winders!! ;)

keep reading. http://rivendell.tryphon.org/wiki/Main_Page

just after the 64bit thing it lists the "live CDs" RRAbuntu and an even earlier one for suse. they should be 32bit. the RRAbuntu is rivendell 1.7, fairly old, but will let you get your feet wet while you shop around for a 64bit computer. since you don't want a new one with win10, get a refurbished from Staples for $200-250 with win7pro. just make sure it's 64bit. i've used 3 of those refurbs for years without trouble.
