Tim, have you looked on ebay for some used Symmetrix 528's or 628's?  They can be had for pretty cheap these days.

Coy,

I am currently in the process of research on this as well as one of the two Valley 400's we were using has developed a nasty buzz. . I have narrowed it down to four options. (yes COST is a factor, so the Wheatstone is out)

1. Behringer Multicom Pro-XL MDX4600 Compressor/Limiter/Expander
(4 channel, which would be great for our on air studio...mostly 2 at a time, but 3 to 4 during Share)

2. Behringer Composer Pro-XL MDX2600 Compressor/Limiter/Expander
(2 channel)

3. dbx 166XS 2-channel Compressor/Limiter/Gate
(2 channel)

4. dbx 286s Channel Strip
(1 channel, only one with pre-amp)

We use Shure SM-7's and run very little pre-amp on the Valley 400, in fact bypassed the buzzing Valley, so running one mic with nothing beyond what the board offers.

Anyone have experience with any of these and would like to weigh in?

Thanks!

Tim

If you don't need a built-in preamp, the old dbx166 is one of my favorite compressors. It's transparent and works on anything.

We're currently using Aphex Channels on all the mics in our facility. There isn't much control...so you get what you get for the most part, but luckily they sound perfect with RE20s. They keep everything dynamically tight and you can't hear them working, which I like.

For what it's worth, I used the Cloudlifter CL-1 or CL-4 on everything. It works magic on dynamic mic output levels without increasing the noise floor.

For an inexpensive effort, that we discovered is as good and clean as we have ever had…  dbx 266xs w/ RE320.  I know that sounds crazy but we were pleasantly surprised when an engineer at the top station(s) in our market suggested it.   You can always test through BSW and send back if you don’t like it.

Hands down the best is the Wheatstone Vorsis M-1. Presets, IP control... Super clean.

There's a 2-channel version, too.

Hey all,

Looking for information on a good compressor/limiter/gate for the production studio.  With mic pre-amp would be a plus, but not a deal maker.  Any models to look into?
