would it work to just 'bite the bullet' and record in audacity's native format, then export the finished product as wav instead of trying to use wav for every step of the process?

Actually, it is a very big inconvenience if you are recording long stretches of audio and you want to be able to stop, edit in the moment, and keep moving forward. I produce many programs with local pastors who come to the studio to record. When they lose their train of thought and want to start over, when they have a coughing fit and need to pause for water, when they realize they skipped over 2 verses of Scripture and need to retake, Audition shines and Audacity is a pain. With Audition, I just stop, go back to that point, and start again. The second editing pass is pretty painless. With Audacity, I have to generate a whole new file, copy paste the retake, and drop it in. Or leave the entire session running, then go back and edit a file that can be twice or three times as long as the finished product. When you do as many hours of editing per week as I do, every click counts.

Seriously, I don’t understand why this is such a big problem.
I’ve adapted quickly ... Not a lot of extra steps at all.

It's only a big deal for folks who only like knowing one way to do a single task.
