A long, long time ago in another universe far, far away; a good friend, now long, long retired, accidently fired off one of VOA Greenville's frequency agile transmitters on 75 meters for about 10 seconds.  It was on one of their large antenna's (something steerable and broadband but I don't recall what).  Knowing that it was about time for the TN phone net, he called me and said listen on 3.980 just before the net when everybody is tuning up.  I did and all of a sudden this leaf searing signal blasted over the top of all the tuner-upers.  He was working on one of the TX's and thought it would be cool to dump many kw of carrier out on 75.  He said it wouldn't do full power unless he rematched the antenna or feed line and that was too much trouble.  I recall it was a 100kw tx _only_ running about 60kw,  On 3980, everybody accused their neighbor of buying a new amp.

He said that wasn't by any means the first time that accident had happened as many of the engineers were hams...

My brother-in-law was on the engineering staff of Trans World Radio.    He told stories of connecting HF ham rigs to the huge short-wave curtain antenna arrays when not in use.   Put out S-meter pegging signals.
