Many moons ago, now, I got permission to do something similar after sign-off. :) First, "float" the two end towers, then bypass the ATU for the center tower. (Direct connection to feedline, easily facilitated by removable jumpers in each ATU.)

In the tx building, a friend set up his rig and tuner. He had to keep the transmit power below 200 watts PEP because his tuner would arc! (Cheap MFJ with nothing but paint between the tuning cap screws & chassis.)

There was a 160M contest going on (it was his thing, not mine. I just provided the use of the boss' antenna & watched.) Every time he threw out his call, he had a "mini pileup" coming back to him. It was, for all intents and purposes, like shooting fish in a barrel. :) Only did it that one time, tho... :) I lost touch with the guy soon after.

By the time I finally upgraded from tech Plus to Extra, I never took advantage of that wonderful antenna... I'm sure I could have gotten permission again, but contesting is anathema to me. ;)

Willie...
