"I send driver to pick up transmitter. You get check in mail for $10,000. You give him $8,000 cash and deposit check. It is great deal!"

I actually had that conversation once, AND they mailed me the check. The check was from a random furniture company in Baltimore. The buyer was coming from Virginia. His address was Ohio. Unbelievable.

That story reminds me of the preacher in my area, who in the early 80's (and before I started KCVO), bought a transmitter and sat it on his front porch. He then told everyone he knew that he was going to start a Christian radio station. So when I came along in 1985 and was actually building my first station, a lot of people wouldn't help me get started because they were burned by the guy who knew nothing about the radio business...but he had a transmitter!
