Thread-topic: [CRTech] Tinkering with Linux (Was: Goodbye WIN10)

I’ve been using Ubuntu Studio for about the past year and a half. I like that they set up their distro to include a lot of “creative suite”-type software, like Audacity, GIMP, and other tools for audio, video, and graphic production. You can choose whether or not to install these programs when you install the OS, so you don’t have to have many extra programs cluttering up your machine.

They also use the XFCE  desktop environment by default, which is designed to use fewer system resources, so you can run it on older machines or save resources for the programs you’re running.

I’ve enjoyed using and learning about Linux personally; I have no experience with using it for radio (i.e. Rivendell/CentOS).

Not yet using for day-to-day, but I *DID* get Cool Edit 2000 to work under WINE. It took a fair bit of finagling to get it there, but it works! That was a "deal make/break" piece of software. :)

Yes, I know about Audacity, but I'm not crazy about how they set it up. I bought Cool Edit years ago, LOVE IT, and want to keep using it. :) I haven't "benchmarked" it yet... just did a simple record/play save/load test, which worked.

Any other software, the Linux versions are excellent... like Libre Office, Firefox, etc. so I know I'm good to go there. :)

I'm doing most of this tinkering in my "free time" at home, so progress is a bit slow.

Thanks for asking. :)

Just curious – does “tinkering with” Linux mean you’re using it day-to-day for real work? Is it your go-to OS? I’ve tinkered with many distros of Linux for many years, and I love Linux, but I still have to use Windows for real work.

Thank you, Dave. :) Excellent article, and I agree emphatically.

Extra bonus: He endorses Linux Mint. :) The more I tinker with it, the more I love it.

Willie warned us :-) my win7 machines never got close to win10, and my win8's stayed win8 by procrastination... no, i tried it on one and went back.
