The unit is approx 13 years old.  The rubber rollers don't seem to be hard or crusty and as I said, it plays just fine.  Without the cassette in the deck and with my finger tripping the sensor at the top, I see the heads rise up for one second, and then drop down.  The spindles do not spin. The spindles turn just fine when playing audio.  Both decks are doing the exact same thing.  They both have separate motors. I took the cover off and the only thing commons are the control surface and circuit board.  If it's not a setting, I fear it is an electrical malfunction preventing either of the FFWD or REV to work properly.

Could be mechanical issues in the transport mechanism.   Try FFWD and REV with no tape in, and check if the take up spindles spin correctly with enough torque, and that the feed spindle turns freely.   Rubber idlers inside may need replacing, or use rubber conditioner designed for pressure rollers to restore them.


You may need to press a little lever the cassette normally catches to make the FFWD and REV operate.

Hi, CRTech:  I powered up a Tascam 202 MKIII dual cassette deck that I haven’t used in years.  Both decks will play forward (a-side) and backwards (b-side) perfectly and the REC function seems to work normally.  Unfortunately, neither deck will FFWD or REV.  When I press the << or >> buttons, I hear a click…and then nothing.  I find it odd that BOTH decks are acting the exact same way so I am wondering if there is some setting that is preventing FFWD and REV.  I have tapped the INTRO CHECK and SYNC REV buttons but nothing seems to happen.  When I tap BLANK SCAN, the words “BLANK SCAN” lights up on the on the display.


That’s all the troubleshooting I’ve done so far.  Any thoughts?
