I know the topic of skimmers has come up before but it’s been a long while, and I’m sure there have been developments since then. I’m consulting with an international ministry that’s mostly volunteer run, so any solution would have to be
simple to use/maintain on the far end with no intervention from anyone stateside. This is probably going to limit the solutions to Windows, so please take that into account (yes, Rivendell could do it, yes, something on a Raspberry Pi could do it, etc… but
non-Windows probably isn’t an option).
The governmental requirement for the particular country is that the broadcast station keep three months of recordings of *all* non-music programming in case auditing is needed in the future. Rigging up closures in the automation
to stop/start the recording each time it goes into or comes out of a music block would probably end up being too complex, so for simplicity this should probably just be a “record everything and automatically break it up by hour/block of hours/day”.
Given those realities and the reality of storage space not being unlimited, a solution would need to be able to: 1.) record at a low sampling rate, 2.) autosave on a user-determined periodic basis, and 3.) ideally, auto-purge old files
based on an adjustable interval (3 months in this case, but that could change in the future).
I’m open to commercial and open source/freeware options, so long as they’re running in Windows. Cost is a consideration, but a one-time purchase isn’t the end of the world.
