There are 2 stage and single stage regulators.  The 2 stage regulator will hold its output setting as the gas bottle goes empty.  The  2 stage regulator costs more money than a single stage regulator.  Some single stage (low $) regulators  will let the output level run up to a much higher pressure just as the gas bottle goes empty.  So the last 50 pounds in the bottle goes poof into your feedline quickly.
