Interesting comments. Maybe my handicap is my left ear seems to be less-sensitive than my right.
My wife comments, occasionally, that I seem to be unable to properly locate which direction a sound is coming from. I tend to prefer an audio vector scope being more reliable than what I am hearing.

        As noted, it sometimes is easier in headphones, as you
        are quickly sited in the middle, but even with speakers,
        spoken word or singing is 99% clearly "in the middle"
        of the sound horizon when in phase.
