I've never understood why star quad? Is it supposed to have better common rejection them a single twisted pair?

The primary colors used were red and white.

When looking at the end of this cable when wacked, the colors go red-red-wht-wht.

I then tie the opposing red and wht conductors together.

A normal cable would have the colors alternate red-wht-red-wht.

When wiring the XLR’s, I do have to make one extra step of checking continuity from one end to the other making sure pins 2 and 3 show up correctly at the far-end.

Seems like you have to know for sure about the twists to know which is right and wrong, wouldn't you?

Or am I missing something?

Sounds like a fun exercise that nobody working in the normal radio world would have enough time or the right gear to stage -- testing the cable for common mode rejection in the possible wiring configurations.

Generally I've only worked with this stuff when it's been installed already at a site. I've never rolled it off a reel and started from scratch. I've had to replace a few connectors and just don't love the process with Star Quad.

We’ve been getting some nice cable from Shina – I mean China.

It has 4 conductors plus braided shield complete with XLR’s at each end.

I’m used to seeing the opposing pairs wired together then connected to either pin 2 or 3 of the XLR.

In other words, if the conductors were numbered 1 thru 4, normal wiring would bond conductors 1&3 together, then bond 2&4 together.

The problem is, these cables have conductors 1&2 bonded together and 3&4 bonded together.

I thought, is it me or have we come up with yet another standard.

I took a look at Belden’s site and the Chinese have it wrong.

I thought I would get a second opinion.

What kind of opinion? Beyond how much I hate working with the stuff?

But that's probably just me.

Hello all,

Do we have any Star Quad mic cable experts out there?

I need a second opinion.
