The last few times I've flown, they are very specific in the pre-flight announcements, to tell passengers to SHUT OFF all electronics, saying something like, "not even flight or airplane mode, please turn them completely OFF".... which disappointed me, because I wanted to at least use the CAMERA with the phone in Airplane Mode... but nope. :(

Once at Altitude, we were allowed to use non-phone devices, or phones in Airplane Mode for other purposes... like the camera or MP3 player.

I had not heard that story about a plane CRASHING because of a rebellious, stupid dolt! :(

just PLEASE take airplane mode seriously. it's NOT to save your battery. it's to save your LIFE. to not interfere with the plane's navigation systems. 'just talk'? tell that to the victims of a commuter flight that crashed while on ILS into grand junction CO a while back. traced it back to somebody talking on their cellphone.
